IN HOUSE THEATRE
Theatre’s just a doorstep away.
OUR PROJECT MANDATE
Our mandate is to produce original Canadian plays, and collective creations that will enrich the communities in which it is produced, culturally and creatively.
OUR GOAL
Our goal is to produce original Canadian plays, and collective creations in an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, cuts production costs drastically, and allows the individuals involved to hone their theatre and cultural craftsmanship while gaining public exposure for their work. Through workshop productions that move forward with the intentions of being produced at other professional Canadian and World Theatres, our theatre will happen here in a house.
HOW WE WORK
Artists will meet every week to create theatre out of their own inventive minds in collective creations or arise from written plays that are directed and acted in for the first time in Canadian history. All of the administrative, productive and creative work will be done by the company members and will occur primarily at the theatre’s current location: 11 Lonsdale Rd.
The administrative and productive part of the company will work to fulfill the positions of Artistic Directors, Production Managers, Technical Directors, Production Managers, Technical Directors, Producers, Stage Managers, Directors, Playwrights, etc and will encourage others interested in gaining or developing skills in these areas to take these positions. These individuals will be enlisted for the company on a per-production basis. The individuals enlisted will not be bound by contract to remain with Back Burner after the production in question has closed, but are welcome to if they choose.
In terms of the creative side of In House Theatre there are roles to be met for both original plays and collective creations. In the case of original plays, the playwright is required to be present for collaboration with the company. The play itself need not be created at In House, but cannot have been professionally produced elsewhere. The playwright will work closely with other In House company members to share and elucidate their vision for the play or project. Questions of ownership can be negotiated on an individual bases when significant contributions have been made and willingly accepted by the playwright to the play. But in most cases the playwright will own the material.
In the case of collective creations the work may be created by a wide variety of company members who are attached to that specific creation. It may be that all of the devisers are performers but this is not a requirement. Contributors to the piece can be from all areas of the company, and in such cases will be given either shared ownership, or acknowledgement of their contributions. After the In House production of the work further ownership of the work will be negotiated.
